North Carolina Centennial of Flight

Warren H. Wheeler

Warren Wheeler began his flying career in North Carolina at the age of fifteen. He received his pilot's license in 1962, and in 1966 he was hired by Piedmont Airlines. Three years later the pilot started Wheeler Flying Service, becoming the first African American to establish and run a commercial air carrier. In 1983, Wheeler established the carrier Caribbean Wings, while keeping his position at Piedmont Airlines. Wheeler moved to the British Virgin Islands in 1994, where he has been president of Caribbean Wings ever since.
